How to make the Grinch

** I apologize for the lack of images/diagrams in this tutorial. I will try my best to make some as soon as I can. If you have any questions please feel free to message me ^_^ **

Materials:
1. Yellow, black, light green, dark green yarn. For this it was difficult to choose which yarn to use because the colors the Grinch had were hard to match. I used a green tea color for the light green and a dark sage/thyme color for the dark green. These colors are from the RedHeart yarn brand.
2. Darning needle
3. Stuffing
4. Size F crochet hook

25. 1sc in each st around. [35]
26. Divide the opening into 3 parts. The other openings are going to be the arms. The arms should have 7 stitches each. The body should have 21.

29. (1sc in first 3 sc. 2sc in next st.) X 6 [30]
30. 1sc in each st around. [30]
This is where you are going to enlarge his belly area. Figure out which part of the body will be the front. This is where we will be increasing like crazy to get that “beer belly” effect.
31. (1sc in first st. 2sc in next st.) X 2. (1sc in next st. 3sc in next st.) X 3. (1sc in first st. 2sc in next st.) X 2. 1sc in last st. [40]

39. Stuff before the hole is too small.
40. Sc2tog until the gap is small enough to sew closed.
41. FO.

[ARMS: Make 2]
1. With green yarn. Attach a slip knot to one of the arm openings so you can continue working on the arm.
2. (1sc in first st. 2sc in next st.) X 3. 1sc in last st. [10]
3. 1sc in each st around. For 5 rows. [10]
4. (1sc in first st. Sc2tog.) X 3. Isc in last st. [7]
5. 1sc in each st around. For 5 rows. [7]
6. Sc2tog X 6. 3sc in last st. [15]
7. 1sc in each st around. [15]
8. Make 3 fingers and 1 thumb. Each finger/thumb should have 5 stitches each.
9. At the end of each finger, taper off to make the tips a little pointy.

[Hair]
1. With green yarn. There are two big chunks of hair at the top of his head. Or I guess you can call it fur.
2. Pick up about 15 stitches on the top of the head. Try to pick up stitches a little bit on the right side of his head.
3. 1sc in each st around. For 3-4 rows. [15]
4. Split this in half with one side having 7 stiches and the other having 8.

[Legs: Make 2]
1. With green yarn. Pick up 25 stitches at the bottom for the legs, forming a circular shape.
2. Make sure that this circular shape is centered and that it’s circumference is smaller than the belly area. We want the belly to look like it is sagging like it does in the cartoon.
3. (1sc in first 3 st. Sc2tog.) X 5[20]
4. Split this opening in half. But this time instead of directly creating a slip stitch with the opposite side, chain 2 first then create a slip stitch. Since you originally had 20 stitches, cutting this in half would give you 10. So adding 2 chains, you would end up with 12 stitches. Make sure that both legs start out with 12.
5. 1sc in each st around. For 4 rows. [12]
6. (1sc in first st. Sc2tog.) X 4 [8]
7. 1sc in each st around. For 5 rows. [8]
8. (1sc in first st. Sc2tog.) X 2. 1sc in next 2 st. [6]
9. 1sc in each st around. [6] **Add a marker here**
10. (1sc in first st. 2sc in next st.) X 3 [9]
11. 1sc in each st around. For 7 rows. [9]
12. (1sc in first st. Sc2tog.) X 3 [6]
13. 1sc in each st around. [6]
14. Stuff and fold the feet outwards where the marker is placed. Do this for both feet.
15. You have the option to sew the legs together or not. I chose to sew it together.

[Face]
1. Using black and yellow yarn. Embroider the smile, nose and the eyes with yarn. Use a picture of the Grinch as a guide.
2. I used yarn for this but you can definitely use felt for the eyes.

[Fur around neck]
1. Use darker colored green yarn. Chain 12 and wrap around the neck. Create a slip stitch to close the loop. You want this to look like a necklace around his neck.
2. From here you are going to crochet like you normally do when you are making a circle.
3. 2sc in each chain around. [24]
4. 1sc in each st around. [24]
5. This is where you can get creative with making the fur. You are basically going to make little triangle shapes around his neck. Each triangle will be about 4-6 stitches in diameter at the base. You can create the triangles separately if you want and then sew them afterwards. The triangles do not have to be the same size.

  3. Cute pattern, directions for fingers are kind of vague, this is my first attempt at this type of project, is there a previous one where the fingers are explained.
