Feature: There’s a Zombie in the Basement
I grew up with Mother Goose, Fairytales and Disney. My favorite movies to watch were Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast. The other day my nephew was talking about zombie this and zombie that. He was asking me all kinds of questions about zombies. I think that this book is great because it combines that fascination with monsters and zombies with learning to conquer your fears. There’s a Zombie in the Basement was written by Stan Yan. It was a Kickstarter project that was funded in 2015. It is a story about a boy named Milo who is scared because he thinks there are monsters in the basement. This is based on his son Milo and his own fears.
It is written well and it all rhymes. This reminds me of Dr. Suess. I always applaud those who can rhyme and make sense at the same time. Yan does a great job at that.
The book is beautifully illustrated and it is created in a style that compliments the story. The color scheme plays on your imagination. It sets the mood for the whole book. Looking at the monsters he is afraid of, they’re generally what we are all afraid of. Clowns, giant spiders, creepy kids and a deranged unicorn? I don’t know about you, but those things are pretty scary to me. I might be checking my basement tonight and locking my bedroom door.
This is great to read to your kids who are afraid there might be monsters in the basement, under the bed or hiding in their closet. We all know what it was like when we were little. Being scared of something that might eat you or kill you messes up your sleep cycle. This book will help your kids control their fears and conquer them. It is a refreshing take on a children’s book and I highly recommend it. I wish there were more books like this one.
The book is available to purchase here: There’s a Zombie in the Basement. Yan also has merchandise you can buy like t-shirts and a companion CD.
