Review: Star Wars: The Force Awakens
I saw this movie in December of last year at around 2am. I was pretty tired but still pretty excited for the movie. I actually saw the movie twice and it was just as amazing the second time around. Honestly though…I am not one of those people obsessed with the Star Wars franchise. Although I do love the movies, I don’t know every single name or place in the Star Wars saga. I’m probably going to get some hate over this but I just want to say that this is my favorite out of the all the other movies. Maybe I need to watch the other movies again to get a more accurate opinion of this movie compared to the rest. It’s been a while since I’ve seen the other movies. However, I am a huge fan of the special effects in this movie. The 3D effect didn’t really add too much to the film but it was still pretty cool. This review includes SPOILERS for some of you so read at your own risk 🙂
The story begins with text like it always does and this time it tells us that the story starts 30 years after the second Death Star has been destroyed. At this point, Luke Skywalker has disappeared and no one knows where he is. In the first scene, a pilot named Poe Dameron obtains a part of a map (in the form of an oddly shaped chip) to Luke Skywalker from Lor San Tekka. When Stormtroopers arrive to destroy the village, he hides the chip in his droid named BB-8. He tells BB-8 to hide and go to a safe place. Poe gets captured and we see in the chaos that one Stormtrooper (Finn) is unsure of what he is doing there. Poe is tortured for information by Kylo Ren because he is also looking for Luke Skywalker. Finn then helps Poe escape and they crash on Jakku when their ship gets hit. Finn survives the wreckage and tries to look for Poe but can’t find him. He travels through the desert in search of anything. Finn finally happens upon Rey who is being attacked by two locals who are trying to steal BB-8. [In an earlier scene, Rey meets BB-8 when she tries to save him from a forager.] Rey and Finn then join forces (Rey does so reluctantly at first) with Finn telling her that he is a resistance fighter to get her to trust him. To escape, they fly the Millennium Falcon which then gets captured by a larger ship controlled by Han Solo and Chewbacca. Han Solo and Rey fly the ship to the Resistance base where we see Princess Leia who is now General of the Resistance.
After they land, Rey wanders off and is drawn to a chest. In the chest is a lightsaber belonging to Luke. As she touches the lighsaber, she is immediately haunted by visions and she runs away. She doesn’t want to find out what this may mean. She runs into the forest and is captured by Kylo Ren who controls her. He tries to torture her the way he did with Poe but it doesn’t work. She is strong with the Force but she has no idea how strong she is yet. At this point I’m thinking she might be related to Kylo Ren. There’s no way that she is just some random girl who has powers from the Light Side. My fiance thinks that she might be Luke’s daughter. When Kylo Ren leaves, she figures out that she can control others so she has the guard let her go. In the meantime, Han Solo, Chewbacca and Finn go on a mission to lower the Death Star’s shield so that the resistance can infiltrate it. They encounter Rey and reunite. Han Solo finds his son and confronts him. He tries to convince him to leave the dark side and come back home. Kylo Ren is too engulfed with darkness at this point. He is struggling with the call from the Light Side and his love for darkness. In order to be at peace, he kills his father. You kinda see this coming when Han Solo sees him down there. Kylo Ren isn’t stupid. He knew his father was looking for him. It’s just so sad that Han Solo thought that he could change his son’s mind. Kylo Ren is so far gone that he can’t even feel anything but darkness. I was hoping that maybe Kylo Ren had some good left in him, but who was I kidding….it’s Star Wars and someone important is bound to die at some point in the movie.
Rey, Finn and Chewbacca are devastated and an epic fight scene ensues. Outside, Finn fights Kylo Ren with Luke’s lightsaber. Finn fails, drops the lightsaber and passes out in the woods. Kylo Ren tries to call the lightsaber but fails to. Rey successfully calls it to herself. They fight and she almost defeats Kylo Ren. A quake breaks the fight and the ground splits the two. Rey runs away and she sees the Millennium Falcon land. Rey and Finn escape with the help of Chewbacca.
Back with the resistance, Finn is still in critical condition and unconscious. C-3PO, who had been out of commission earlier, wakes up suddenly and reveals that he has the rest of the map leading to Luke. Rey and Chewbacca fly off in search of Luke. Rey climbs a mountain and finds Luke at the very top. He turns around and she tries to give him back his lightsaber which he is reluctant to hold.
I think they did a fantastic job with the entire film. I can’t wait to see what they have in store for the next movie. I think it was great that they picked two fairly unknown actors for the main roles. The acting was phenomenal and they did well with the character development. My favorites out of the entire film were Rey and BB-8. I love the way they choreographed BB-8’s movements. He doesn’t say much but we still know what he means. The film was very well put together and I hope they don’t wait years to come out with the next one. If you haven’t seen this movie, you should!! It grossed about 247.97 million opening weekend which is pretty impressive. It beat Jurassic World, The Avengers, The Avengers: Age of Ultron and Iron Man 3. I’m guessing there’s a lot of pressure placed on the next movie to be just as great or even better than this one.
Would I recommend: Yes
