I didn’t hear the term selfie until recently. I don’t remember where I heard or read about it but it was probably on a blog site that was making fun of those who make them. So, for those who don’t know what selfies are, here is the “official” definition from Wikipedia:
A selfie is a type of self-portrait photograph, typically taken with a hand-held digital camera or camera phone.
So with that being said, I also want to say that I am one of those people (sad to say). It is extremely narcissistic but we can’t help it apparently. What is it about taking selfies that makes us feel good about ourselves? It’s probably the comments, other’s reactions and to boost our self-esteem (lol). It’s pretty shocking what other people post as their selfie and others just post them non-stop (like I don’t see your face enough in public already). There are even sites that promote taking selfies and I’m not talking about Facebook. There’s Instagram, tumblr and the recently retired Dailybooth. I loved Dailybooth by the way 😉
Selfies have been around for a while now. The word has just gotten a little more popular in recent times. The word selfie isn’t even a new word. It has been around since 2005 and coined by photographer Jim Krause. Recently though, since it has become more popular, it has even made its way into Oxford dictionaries. On YouTube there are even videos teaching others how to take the perfect selfie. Is it just me or are these videos a tad bit silly? I just don’t think I’m ever going to find myself searching through the internet on how to take a better picture of myself if all I’m going to do is update my Facebook photo. It doesn’t take a pro to teach me how to do that. But you know, at least it’s free on YouTube and you don’t have to pay for it. I did do a search and found a book on Amazon priced at less than $5. Seriously? I just…I don’t underst….I’m just going to walk away from that one.
Anyway, I’m probably going to get a little bit of hate from this…or a lot 😛 But yeah, are you guilty of taking selfies? What do you think about this obsession with them in recent years? Let me know in the comments 🙂
