On a Quest for the Perfect Camera
Ever since I graduated and got my Associate’s degree I’ve wanted to go back to making tutorials. I tried to, once, with my Canon PowerShot SD1000 and the macro setting for video wasn’t working so well. I’ve had the SD1000 for a while now so I wasn’t surprised when it stopped working like it used to. So I looked for a new camera and decided to stick to Canon PowerShots because they produce pretty good quality videos and images. Even though Canons do tend to have larger file sizes, I don’t mind, just as long as they have good quality images and videos. So I looked for something good but also cheap. At first I got the Canon PowerShot A1300. It a only $114 but I had my Discover card rewards so I paid less than $90 for it. To my dismay it wasn’t as good as I thought it was going to. There was barely any customization on it. It felt a little cheap. The only thing that is a plus about is that it can take decent pictures and it is battery powered. I really didn’t like it and haven’t used it much. I’m even thinking of selling it but I’m not sure if anyone would even want to buy the camera.
Then after some time, I started really researching and looking for a better camera. I wanted to save up because I knew that it would be really expensive. I thought of getting the Canon EOS Rebel T4i because I have heard very good things about it. But then I thought against it because it was really expensive (a whopping $800 or so) and I don’t need a professional camera. I don’t even know how to change the settings to take nice pictures. Then I started looking at camcorders because I wanted to focus on video and sacrificed picture quality. I even posted something about it here: Picking and Choosing. After looking some more, I thought that there probably is a camera out there that takes great pictures and great video. I didn’t want to have to sacrifice picture quality for video quality. And plus, I saw this video and decided against getting a camcorder: Best Cheap Camera for YouTube Videos? In the video he talks about how Canons have great quality and that video cameras are not very good for shooting YouTube videos.
I googled some more and found a site recommending some cameras that were no so expensive but also had good quality images. Then I went on YouTube to watch reviews about a couple of them. YouTube is a good place to go to for camera reviews because some YouTubers post samples on there so you can see if the video/image is good quality or not. My favorite reviews come from Techno Buffalo. They have amazing reviews and they also go by the name of jon4lakers on YouTube. One of the cameras I was looking at was the Canon SX260. It was much, much cheaper than the T4i (about $300). Below is the review for it.
He goes in depth on the reviews and is very informative. He obviously knows a lot about cameras and even though I didn’t know what some of the terms meant, I still found his reviews helpful. So after looking in the Canon SX260, I really thought that this was the one. Finally a camera I can order and use. But then, I still wasn’t satisfied and I wanted to make sure that this was really the best one for the price. Then I read about the Canon PowerShot S100 ($329). I looked for YouTube reviews and I noticed that Techno Buffalo made a review about this camera too. After I watched the video I was sold. I thought to myself, this is it. This is the one. I have to buy this!
So I finally decided to buy the camera on Amazon. I saw a listing for it on eBay but I thought that it would be best if I just ordered it from Amazon because Adorama was the seller. Adorama is pretty trustworthy and they ship/deliver quickly. So it took me a while to actually buy a camera. There are a lot of things to factor in. You can’t just buy whatever is popular at the moment. There are several people on YouTube using the Canon EOS Rebel cameras to record their videos. Those are really expensive and if you look around more and do more research, there are other cameras out there that you can use. I ‘m glad I researched more and didn’t just buy the T4i.
When I got the Canon PowerShot S100, I used it right away and the video/image quality is amazing. I’ve already recorded some footage with it and I’m loving it so far. The only thing I didn’t expect was that it focuses during video. It can be annoying at times but I figured that I could just put a plain piece of paper in the back when I’m filming tutorials so it can focus on my hand instead of the hardwood floor. I’ll be coming out with a review later on this year when I have more experience using it so keep a look out for that.
Below are the links I used for reference when looking for cameras. These are pretty good sites so check them out!
Also, just search on YouTube and I’m sure you can find other great reviews on whatever you want to get. Happy researching and I hope you find your perfect camera 🙂 Below is a sample of the video I made with the Canon PowerShot S100.
