Pogs and Beanie Babies
Summer is approaching and those days are very nostalgic for me. I remember being really excited for recess. We would stand in line in the courtyard before scattering to play amongst ourselves. Things were so much simpler back then. I have vague memories here and there. I wish I had a better memory. I have bits and pieces of my childhood locked up. I remember when pogs were so popular. My sister and I would bring them to school and play with our friends. There was this sale at a local craft store. I believe they were selling 100 pogs for cheap. We were so excited. I still have my pogs actually. I used to take them out and look at all of them. Now they’re buried in my closet. Oh and beanie babies. How popular were those? I think even more than pogs were. I have those in a plastic container in my room underneath the plastic container of yarn. My sister and I would collect them. They also had them as toys for happy meals at McDonald’s. Back then we used to collect fast food toys. Those were fun times. When I was in Singapore we used to collect Burger King Rugrats toys. I really miss those days. Even though we were all busy worrying about being kids and wanting to grow up, those were the good ol’ days when we didn’t have to worry about getting a job. We didn’t worry about being alone and having to settle down. Those were the days my sister and I had boy band posters up on our walls using putty. They even left putty stains on the walls. I remember those days and smile.
I had a good childhood and I’m lucky to have had the opportunity to have grown up in three countries. It’s an experience not many people have. My memories of the Philippines are more vague than others because we left when I was around 6 years old. Growing up in Singapore was great. Singapore is such a busy country and there’s so much to see. Thinking back on it now makes me want to go back and live in the city again. The lights, the excitement. I miss it.
Recently I’ve been trying to track down my old friends. I’ve always been really crappy at keeping in touch with my childhood friends. When we left Singapore, I used to write my friends. And I mean actually writing using a pen and paper. Wow, this makes me feel old. Who writes people anymore? 😉 Anyway, I stopped writing and haven’t gotten in contact until now. Facebook is also helping since I have found some friends on there already.
But yeah, its nice to reminisce now and then. I tend to do that a lot.
